What is Virtual Private Networking (VPN)?

Virtual Private Networking is the use of existing infrastructure (the Internet) to establish secure communication between trusted associates in a very cost effective way.

The use of T-1 lines starts at about $1000 per month per sight. So if you have a close working relationship with an off-sight business that you want to "network" with, you are looking at about $2000 per month and your dedicated line is an easier target for hackers. Also, you still need to install and maintain encoding and decoding hardware on both ends of the network just to get started. That still does not guarantee that a dial-up connection to you system is secure.
